LITTLE Yuin Pre-School last Tuesday hosted a “Book Buzz” event for families of babies and young children enrolled in the pre-school and Wallaga Lake Koori Community south of Narooma.

A Book Buzz launch consists of the gift of book bags with board books for babies and pre-schoolers from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, a nationwide project which supports young children reading in their homes.

Warren Foster welcomed everyone to country.

Pre-school manager Lea Sutherland then introduced parents and children to the launch with a reading of one of the books “Dear Zoo” by Rod Clement. Finally, Warren engaged the children with a reading of “1,2,3 of Animals” by Bronwyn Bancroft, including his translation of the written text into traditional language.

The children were excited to receive their red book packs and share them with their families.

The Outreach Centre provided a barbecue lunch for everyone to celebrate the event.

Caroline Constable and Julie Hall worked very hard assisting Lea with the children and the preparation.

Surrounding schools joined in with visiting teachers including Jaci Murphy and Lyn Thomas from Narooma Public School, and Neil Rutherford from Bermagui Public School and Laura McHarg from Tilba Public School. Doreen Walker also visited from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Local literacy teacher Beth Wilson introduced the pre-school committee to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

The community would like to thank Debra Dank, the project manager of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation for her support. We look forward to continuing the Buzz of reading into the future!
