Ho, ho, ho...Merry Christmas!

23 Dec, 2009 11:12 AM
THE Christmas spirit has enveloped the Narooma district with houses lit up by Christmas lights, tourists arriving, shoppers shopping and more than 600 coming out for the annual Carols by Candlelight at NATA Oval on Sunday.

Narooma Chamber of Commerce president Nigel Jackson said the turn-out at the carols was great and much better than the previous year.

Santa arriving on the back of fire engine, lights flashing and sirens blaring, had all the children running to meet him as he strolled onto the oval and then up on stage reminding everyone to be good.

High school and primary-age children were among the fantastic line-up of performers at the Narooma Plaza-sponsored event, while well-known local musicians Graeme Osborne and Merinda Hurren encouraged the audience to sing and dance along with the CWA choir performing.

Carols organisers at the Plaza said they were ecstatic at the turn out and could not have done it without the assistance of Mr Osborne, the chamber and everyone involved.

The list of Christmas light houses in Narooma is as long as ever, but highlights including Jeff Murphy’s big tree on Marine Drive, Dawn Kenny on Clarke Street, Angela Hansen on Taylor Street, Moya Hicks on Costin Street, Dianne Wilkes on Loader Parade, Vince Harper on Dorothy Drive and of course Trevor Bennett on Fisherman’s Crescent.

Moya Hicks says come on down the drive way to get the full effect of her lights.

This year Trevor is donating proceeds from his lights to Gemma Chandler with the heart-warming story inside today’s edition.

There are also many other Christmas happenings going on, so open up the paper, read on and enjoy the holidays – happy holidays to you all from the Narooma News staff.

Editorial: Happy holidays to all

THE staff at the Narooma News would like to wish everyone happy and safe holidays. I think we managed to get a Christmas-themed story on just about every one of our news pages.

While there was much talk around Australia this week of another so-called saint – we are have our own real saint in the form of Trevor Bennett who performs real, verifiable miracles, plain for everyone to see in black and white.

Stop by Trevor’s house on Fishermen’s Crescent while you are checking out the Christmas lights and make a donation, as you know it will go to a good cause.

It was commented to me that we shouldn’t make a big deal about the unfortunate violence on Payne Street at this time when tourists are in town – but we at the Narooma News will not shy away from our responsibilities to keep everyone informed.

It would indeed irresponsible for us to brush such things under the carpet.

The good news is that we don’t have a lot of these kinds of incidents in our district, and let’s keep it that way.
