Local long board champ wins Australian titles

PLANTATION Beach was the location for this month's OTBC point score competition, and the conditions were what most people would call average.

There was swell, it just wasn't very clean and had most surfers scrambling for the odd good one, which were few and far between in all the mush.

The first surfers to take the water were the open short boards, who faired quite well in the not-so-great conditions.

Matt Lawrence showed some form early as did Liam Hannigan with some nice fins-out snaps, but the dominant force in the opening heat was Ray Lawrence who pulled off some huge tuns and long rides to stand out early in the proceedings.

Next out in the water were the cadets, who didn't really care much about the conditions they were just frothing to get out there.

Jake Clarke, one of the youngest cadets, absolutely destroyed it out there.

He was tearing the cresters apart like it was nothing.

Also surfing well from the cadets were Jarred Kennedy, Justin Bell and Ben Mercer who are always out in the water practicing for the competitions.

Isaac Ishadi also surfed well scoring what was probably the turn of the day, with a big layback-carve-cuttie-air-floater off the end section.

As the tide came in the surf cleaned up a little which was enough for the mals to get out there.

Mick Challis was going deep on the sets trying to win the judges hearts, as was Woody with some nice straight-hand rides.

But what Ray Lawrence did in the short boards did on his mal and absolutely tore the lineup apart going vert and throwing buckets.

The girls also gave the conditions a good go, with Sam Facchin taking a few on the head and Charlotte Lock getting some good rides.

All the whingeing about the conditions was forgotten as the day drew to a close and everyone hung around for the barbecue and enjoyed a snag or two.

A huge congratulations to one of our major sponsors, Ian Hockey of Malibu Mex who is the new Australian Long Board Champion in the over 45's.

Ian travelled to Victor Harbour in South Australia to compete and everyone is very proud of his effort.
