Memorial tower gets a new look with digital clock

27 Jan, 2010 10:20 AM
THE Narooma war memorial got a new look last week when the much anticipated new clock was installed.

The new digital clock was chosen over a more traditional clock face due to cost concerns and now should be fully paid for thanks to local donations to the Returned Services League Narooma branch and a grant from Veterans Affairs.

Overseeing the clock replacement after the previous more traditional clock was vandalised with someone breaking off the clock hands was RSL secretary Dennis Meadowcroft.

“We were pleased to see the clock go up (Thursday) morning and our thanks go to the very hard and consistent work of electricians Paul White and Charlie Bettini have carried out for us during this venture,” Mr Meadowcroft said.

“On behalf of the Narooma Returned and Services League of Australia, we would like to thank The Narooma News for the publicity they have given us through the progress reports.

Thanks go to the Minsters Mike Kelly and Ms Penny Sharp for their support of my application for a grant from Veterans Affairs.

“Our thanks also to the Eurobodalla Shire Council for the use of their vehicles and also the Narooma Depot workers for their assistance.

“Finally our thanks to the community for their donations.”

A total of $5266 was raised through donations, while the Department of Veterans Affairs grant totalled $4000, which when combined should cover the cost of the new clock.

There is some fine tuning needed on the clock’s temperature read-out, as Mr White said he needed to move the temperature gauge so it was not affected by the sun beating down on the cover.
