A FOOT pursuit took place down the centre of the Princes Highway from the Narooma bridge past the busy shops on the Flat at 3.30pm last Tuesday.
Two men allegedly stole a case of beer from a bottle shop and were then spotted at the bridge. One was arrested but the other took off on foot down the highway and was chased by one officer for around 2km.
Another officer spotted the man further south on the highway and continued the chase into a residential area where the man was caught and arrested in a yard on Hyland Avenue.
The 17-year-old Bermagui man was charged with stealing, escaping lawful custody and entering closed land with intent.
Bail was refused. The second man was charged with stealing and released.
Cobargo warrant
POLICE in Cobargo on Sunday morning arrested a 30-year-old local man wanted on a warrant for not appearing at Bega court last month. Bail was refused until his next appearance.
Car confrontation
A CAR involved in a previous traffic violation was recognised in a Narooma car park at 11pm on Saturday.
After stopping to check details, police smelled cannabis and while searching the car were confronted and challenged by one of occupants.
Police located 25 grams of cannabis on the 24-year-old ACT man, who was issued a court notice for possession.
Fishing gear theft
SOMEONE stole fishing lures, an emergency beacon and a wrench from a boat parked on Montague Avenue between Friday night and Sunday afternoon.
Single plant
POLICE located a 1.5-metre cannabis plant in the back garden of a Narooma residence last Tuesday and issued a court notice to a 36-year-old woman.
Campers be warned
THERE were the usual incidents of thefts of items, including eskies, fishing gear and a skateboard, stolen from campsites in van parks and camping areas over the holiday period.
Police remind visitors and locals camping to secure items when away or overnight.
Break-ins at Tuross newsletter reports
THE Tuross Giant community newsletter reported more break-ins last week.
“Please make sure you lock your doors including back doors. And definitely lock your cars,” the newsletter email read.
Police are currently investigating a number of break-ins, some in the older part of Tuross and others in the Boulevarde and Coila area, the newsletter said.
“The thieves are bold and will enter and steal wallets and purses as you sleep and have done so already.
“If you have neighbours be sure to pass this on to them - if you have holiday visitors next door please warn them - we need to be vigilant. Please...if you have any info at all ring the police.”
Rotary helps make safer drivers
NAROOMA Rotarians supported local Year 11 students who attended the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program at Moruya Racecourse last week.
“This is a wonderful national road safety education program that targets senior students who are just starting to drive or ride in vehicles driven by their friends,” said Narooma Rotary Youth Director Laurelle Pacey. “It’s presented by road safety professionals including police.”
There were several interactive sessions, including speaking with someone who had experienced a devastating road crash, seeing and feeling the distance a vehicle takes to stop when travelling at different speeds, and hearing first-hand the ripple effect of a road accident on family and friends.
About 85 per cent of Narooma High Year 11 students joined students from other schools across the shire. Narooma Rotary Club paid for the bus for Narooma students.
RYDA was organised by Roger Pearson of Batemans Bay Rotary Club with assistance from Rotarians from the Bay, Moruya and Narooma. Narooma Rotarians who helped over the two days were Angie Ulrichsen, Chris O’Brien and Bob Antill.
“Statistics tell us that getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle is the single most dangerous thing a young Australian can do,” Ms Pacey said. “This program helps to make our roads safer places for our young people and for others in our community”
