A SPECIAL memorial and very heavy table has been stolen from the Montreal Goldfield site.
The memorial table for Allan Douglas, a former member of the Montreal Goldfield Management Committee, was stolen from the Montreal Goldfield site on Wednesday night, January 7.
This table required a small crane to get it in to position. It would have taken three or four strong men to lift it or drag it to the fence, tip it over the wire before sliding it on to a utility or trailer.
The table was made of old Cuttagee bridge timber, which was very solid like railway sleepers.
The dimensions are 1.2 metres by 1.6 metres, roughly blond in colour, stained and very, very heavy.
Goldfields member Bob Hearn is keen to hear from anybody even if they want to remain anonymous.
Mr Hearne described the thieves as determined and calculating because of the table’s weight and size.
“The Montreal Goldfield Management Committee felt it didn’t need to be cemented in because of its weight but we were obviously not attuned to the criminal mind. Being built as a memorial table to Allan Douglas makes the theft harder to take!”
The table was made by local carpenter Chris Reid specifically for Allan’s family and the plaque to go on the table has just been finished and is ready to be attached.
The Douglas family, Montreal Committee and Montreal Guides are devastated by the theft.
Anyone who knows what happened to the table can contact any Montreal committee member or guide, including Bob Hearne at 6493 4645, or the police
If you have information of its whereabouts and want to remain anonymous, you can also contact the Bermagui tourist information center on 6493 3054.
As this table means so much to everyone in Bermagui, it’s hoped the table is returned on a “no questions asked” basis.

“Lock it or lose it” message
Police are again reminding visitors to the Far South Coast to “Lock It or Lose it” while on holidays. Far South Coast Crime Prevention Officer Senior Constable Scott White said, “We would just like to remind our visitors who are staying in Holiday Resorts to be mindful of their property. Unfortunately we have seen several incidents over the holiday period where people have left things like mobile phones, wallets and fishing equipment unattended and they have been stolen. Resort operators are working with police and doing all they can do to provide a safe environment but people need to take responsibility for their own property. “If anyone notices suspicious activity within a resort they should notify the police and the Resort Management as soon as possible. Senior Constable White said, “We want people to enjoy their time here on the South Coast and not go away with a negative experience.”
