Possessions become goodies for thieves

THERE has been an outbreak of thefts from vehicles as thieves have broken into or simply opened unlocked the doors of cars around Narooma in the past week.

An unlocked Landcruiser on the Princes Highway was entered overnight on Thursday with a Blackberry, mobile phone and cash stolen.

Two Ford Territories parked at 1080 Beach, Mystery Bay were broken into sometime after midday on Friday with a wallet, cash, cards, a mobile and $100 in change stolen from one and the other that had its window smashed had an iPod, GPS and sunglasses stolen.

A Suzuki parked on The Loop, Narooma was broken into on the night of January 9 with a GPS stolen.

A camera and Nintendo DS were stolen from a Camry parked on Loader Parade on Thursday night.

A Subaru parked at Heywoods Beach, Wallaga Lake was broken into at around 5.30pm on Friday with a handbag, wallet, mobile and glasses stolen.

Finally, a Daiwoo parked at the Narooma Plaza between 1pm and 4pm on Friday was broken into with a small of amount of cash from the console stolen.

Police remind residents and visitors not to leave any valuables in vehicles and anyone with information should contact Narooma police on 4476 2044 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Witnesses sought in New Year assault

NAROOMA police are hoping to speak to anyone who was present at a fight between a group of young people on New Year’s Eve.

A 17-year-old Narooma boy and his friends were walking up to the Narooma Golf Club to watch the fireworks when he was allegedly set up and bashed by another group of young people at about 11.30pm at the Ballingala and Bay street intersection.

The victim’s mother said her son tried to reason with the attackers but to no avail when he turned around he allegedly got hit in the face, which broke his nose and resulted in a black eye and he continued to take blows when he was on the ground.

“My son and his friends were walking to the golf club to watch the fire works and see the New Year come in but instead ended up in an ambulance on his way to hospital,” she said.

Drunken rear-ender

A 33-YEAR-old Victorian man rear-ended another vehicle in a minor collision on Montague Street, Bermagui at 11.20pm on Monday, January 11.

The driver admitted to trying to answer a mobile and failed a roadside breath test registering 0.110 resulting in a mid-range drink driving charge.

Fire station burgled

UNKOWN persons broke into the Tuross Head Rural Fire Service station sometime between 9.30pm on Tuesday and midday the next day.

A locker one on of the fire trucks was broken open and a pair of bolt cutters found inside used to cut a padlock locking a fridge. They also ransacked a number of drawers but nothing was stolen.

Business break-ins

A BUILDING housing several businesses on Wagonga Street, Narooma was broken into sometime between 6.30pm on Thursday and 8.25am the next morning. Thieves stole $500 from one business.

Another business in the Glasshouse Rocks Road was targeted that night when thieves broke in through a toilet window stealing a coffee tin of coins and a bottle of beer.

Forensic officers examined both scenes and anyone with information should contact Narooma police at 4476 2044 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

House on fire

POLICE and Rural Fire Service volunteers responded to reports of an abandoned house at Umbarra Road, Wallaga Lake on fire at 4pm on Friday.

The fire that was accidentally lit was extinguished before extensive damage was caused.

Euro drive away

TWO French tourists backed their van into an ACT-registered vehicle at Ken Rose Park, Narooma at around 9.30am on Thursday but kept driving.

Police using a description of the vehicle tracked it down in Eden later that day. The two young female backpackers claimed they thought the damage was only minor and police issued them a caution for negligent driving and failing to stop after an accident.

Run-away vehicle

A VEHICLE parked on a slope on Eastaway Avenue, Narooma rolled free and into a tree at 8pm on Friday with a failed handbrake to blame.

Mystery theft

SOMEONE stole lifejackets and a water ski from a boat parked at the Mystery Bay campground sometime between January 4 and Tuesday, January 12.

Flat bedspread theft

A RESIDENT reported a yellow bedspread had been stolen from the unsecured clothesline at flats on the Princes Highway, Narooma sometime before 3pm last Wednesday.

Vandalism smash

A FORD Falcon parked outside a club in midtown Narooma had its rear window smashed sometime between 7.30pm and 9.30pm last Wednesday in an apparent act of vandalism. Anyone with information should contact Narooma police on 4476 2044.

Box trailer returned

A BOX trailer reported stolen from Forsters Bay Road on Wednesday was returned a few days later by a family member who had borrowed it.
