Reconciliation and culture at play

13 Aug, 2008 03:46 PM
Indigenous students from Little Yuin Preschool celebrated NAIDOC Week with their friends from Bermagui Preschool on Monday.

Elder Shirley Campbell was pleased the students from Bermagui preschool had come to join in the celebrations.

“I think this should be done more often, getting the kids to mix,” Mrs Campbell said.

Mrs Campbell said it was good for the children to get to know each other in pre-school as it would establish friendships for primary school.

Playing together to celebrate indigenous heritage and culture, the preschoolers painted Australian native animal cut outs with local artist Jude Walker.

The children then learnt the local indigenous names for their painted animal cut outs to be used in a play.

Healthy For Life team members Jane Haverfield and Aboriginal health worker Dennis Scott put on a barbecue and talked about being healthy before handing out toothpaste, toothbrushes and pamphlets about healthy living.

“Healthy For Life is a project to improve Aboriginal health,” Healthy for Life team member Jane Haverfield said.

Gabrielle Powell from little Yuin preschool organised funding for the event through the Indigenous Coordination Centre (ICC).

“We want to have positive relations with the children to build better futures for the indigenous kids,” she said.

Members from the Narooma Get Up group also attended the celebrations.
