THE “Ghost Ships of the Coast Run” DVD tells of the cargo and passenger steamer “Bega”, the Illawarra and South Coast Navigation Company’s ship, which has become familiar to locals from the Corkhill Collection photos.
Max Gleeson, who was voted the Australasian Underwater Photographer of the Year, not only tells the story of her fatal voyage on this DVD but goes to dive on the wreck and shows the “Bega” as she is now in her marine environment.
Locals will recognize Keith Appleby, as the team leave Bermagui harbour on his boat to make the great footage about the wreck and the marine life surrounding it.
A bonus is the stories of the loss of two other South Coast working vessels, the “Woniora” and the “Birchgrove Park”.
The cargo steamer Bega left Tathra wharf on her ill fated, final voyage on April 5, 1908 under the command of Captain Steven Bishop.
On board were animals of the district for exhibition at the Sydney Royal show as well as 176 pigs as deck cargo.
The 57.7m long Bega was driven by two Rankins Wonders-engines of giving 98 h.p. from two two-cylinder disconnecting compound engines, made by Rankin and Blackmore at Greenock, near Glasgow.
Bega went down 28kms south of Bermagui and now lies 76 m or 250 feet down and provides habitat for Pt Jackson breeding sharks, nannygai and other fish.
