Sculptor Richard Moffatt donates major work to Living Artist

17 Mar, 2010 10:53 AM
THE renowned sculptor of large metal creations that spring from paddocks and fields is at again.

Tanja-based Richard Moffatt is not only working on a giant 5-metre sphere for the Snowy River Shire he has also generously donated two of his smaller spheres to the Far South Coast Living Artist Project, a project he fully supports as it allows emerging artists to live their dreams.

“A Pair of Spheres” is the grand prize in this year’s Living Artist raffle.

The Living Artist project’s new president and the first recipient of the Living Artist scholarship Poppy Benton is grateful for Richard’s generosity.

"Richard Moffatt is a most generous person, constantly giving his time and his art works to support local causes whether art or ecology,” Poppy said.

“His most recent donation will help raise funds for our third Living Artist scholarship.

“Every ticket sold represents a 1000th contribution to the $35,000 scholarship."

The third Living Artist scholarship will be granted to a local artist living somewhere between Batemans Bay and Eden and once chosen will be the recipient of funds raised from the raffle, the biennial art auction and other fundraising activities.

Richard Moffatt’s latest donation the project is "A Pair of Spheres", which are assemblages of hundreds and hundreds twisted railway clips used to secure rail to sleepers, shaped into a 1-meter-high sphere with a baby sphere.

The beautiful work is valued $10,000 and only 300 tickets at $35.00 will be sold.

The prize will be drawn at the celebrity art auction on Queen’s Birthday Weekend on June 13.

In 2008, the Living Artist Art Raffles were donated by Klaus Moje, Philip Cox and Nafisa Naomi raising almost a third of the scholarship of $35,000.

Richard said he is eager to assist the Living Artist project.

“I am really excited to be involved with something that allows people to do something they love to do,” he said.

“I know I am fulfilling my dream of working on my art, which is my first choice in life, there is nothing else I would rather be doing and I am willing to do anything I can to help someone else to live their passion.”

Richard is a busy man and is currently working a massive 5-metre sphere that will stand in a paddock at the gateway to the Snowy River Shire near the Cooma airport.

The structure that will have to be dismantled and rebuilt on site is being made of discarded material from the ski-tube tunnel that Richard discovered in a scrap metal yard.

“It fits into the vastness of the landscape and needs to be have significant size otherwise you would whizz past and not even notice it.”

Richard also has a work in the Bermagui Sculpture on the Edge event on display on the Bermagui headland last week.

Living Artist project founder and past president Prue Acton welcomed Mr Moffatt’s generosity and involvement.

“We appreciate the generous support from the community for Living Artist and we appreciate the recognition of the importance of the Arts to the local culture and economy,” Ms Acton said.
