Shire repairs Dalmeny pathway for bike-a-thon

24 Feb, 2010 10:45 AM
THE Rotary Bike-a-thon from Dalmeny to Narooma this Sunday (February 28) will go ahead despite significant damage to a section of the cycleway during last week’s deluge.

Eurobodalla Shire Council has moved swiftly to repair the pathway at Yabbra Beach that washed away in the recent deluge and expects the repairs to be completed by the weekend.

“After Council’s fantastic prompt response, it’s all systems go for Sunday,” said Rotary Bike-a-thon coordinator Rotarian Bob Aston.

“It will be a wonderful way for friends and family to celebrate our wonderful pathway and the tremendous community effort that’s gone into it.”

Mr Aston urges everyone to drop off their entry forms and money by Thursday afternoon; “the more people get them in beforehand the easier it will be on the day”.

Narooma-Kianga-Dalmeny Cycleway Fundraising Committee secretary Sue Liddy is absolutely delighted with the event.

“We’re all excited about it and the interest it’s generating,” Mrs Liddy said. “Money raised will go towards the next and final stage of the Cycleway.”

ABC South East manager Ian Campbell is the celebrity cyclist who will start the bike-a-thon.

It starts from Dalmeny Rotary Park at 8.30am on Sunday and ends at Narooma Rotary markets behind the Visitors’ Centre.

There will be a special section at the markets on renewable energy and sustainability. Prospective stallholders should book a site with markets manager Chris O’Brien 0408 489247 by close of business today.

Riders will go in groups of up to six at 90 second intervals; checkpoints and marshals will be along the way.

Mr Aston will brief all volunteer marshals at The Whale at 6.30pm this Thursday night. It will end by 7pm.

Entry forms are available from Narooma and Bodalla Public Schools, Narooma High, South Coast Lighting at Dalmeny or Rolf’s Patisserie in Narooma’s Industrial Estate.

Please put entries inside an envelope with correct money or cheque payable to ‘Narooma Rotary Club’ and put in the box provided at any of these five locations.

All riders will receive a certificate of participation.

A bus will be provided for passengers only (no bikes) at 10am and 11am from NATA Oval to Dalmeny for a gold coin donation.
