AFL - Lions by a whisker

01 Jul, 2009 01:27 PM
Lion supporters were out in force on Saturday at Narooma where they came from the ground feeling as exhausted as the players. Lion supporters witnessed a heart stopper in the seniors against the Eden Whalers where the game came down to the wire and the Lions came home by a whisker.

The Lions having lost their last two games have slipped on the ladder and needed a win to keep them in touch on the top four.

The Lions game began on a high where they found form and kicked an outstanding eight goals to three in the first quarter. But Eden to their credit was not going to take the game lying down and came back stronger and determined to make amends. It was a tough tussle between the two sides where the ball changed many hands but the Whalers came within reach going into half time. The third quarter a change in the ruck and the Lions teamwork twinkled with the Lions with a bit of a breather.

Last quarter and what a quarter, Eden were down but certainly not out. Both sides worked hard at the ball but Eden were coming back the stronger and came within two points.

The Lions however held their composure and kicked two goals when they counted.

The game went to the final siren and the Lions celebrated. The game was a hard fought match and a contest I'm sure the players will reflect on when they come up against the ladder leaders. All 20 players were outstanding but a special mention goes to Simon (Butters) Mackie, who with an ankle injury kicked eight goals.

Quarter by quarter score Lions Q1 8.3, Q2 11.4, Q3 15.6, Q4 17.8 = 110 Eden Q1 3.3, Q2 8.6, Q3 10.10, Q4 15.12 = 102. Best on ground: Butters, Jesse Pantling, Jacob Niehus, Jason Duhring, Jack Clothier and Callum Donohue. Goals: Butters 8, Reddog 4, Sam Stokes 2, Nugget 1, Moppa 1 and Colin Fosternally 1.

From other results over the weekend the seniors still sit on fourth spot with Batemans Bay and Merimbula Diggers on 32 and Tathra, Lions on 28.

The Lions travel to Pambula this weekend and need to have a convincing win to bump up their percentage.

In the U15s the Lions regrettably didn't gain the four points. The cubs could have turned the game around in their favour if all the players were committed to chase the ball. The cubs really needed to win this one to be of any contention for the finals. They now sit last on the ladder and need to find momentum to get them out this predicament. Final score: Lions 9.10 = 64 to Eden 13.9 = 87. Goals: Alexander Jones 3, Jedd Clothier 3, Joe Nugent 2 and Jordan Lang 1. Best on ground: Liam Brogan, Jedd Clothier, Alexander Jones, Hatden Miller, Joe Nugent and Tim Watson.

The Reserves was a one sided affair for Eden but the Lions were still out there having a go. Number one goal goes to Blackie. Best on ground: Tristan Wellens, Nathan Scanlon, Paddy Penton, Rhys Peel, Wayne Partlett and Brett Dubois.

The Trivia night was a successful night and well attended by locals. A big thanks goes to Kerry Jones, Joe Jones, Brad, Mark Hawker and Growler.

Special thanks to Micko the Lions MC for the night.
