ON Saturday the Narooma Lions Football Club hosted the qualifying final at Bill Symth Oval Narooma.
The day started with a cloudless sky, the sun was shining and the oval looked picture perfect for a big day of football.
First game the U13’s and the Bermagui Breakers were playing the Merimbula Diggers.
Diggers won convincingly and they will be hard to beat come the Grand Final in two weeks time.
Final score Diggers 11.10 = 76 to Breakers 3.3. = 21.
U15’s and it was the local Lions Cubs taking on the undefeated Pambula Panthers.
revious games and the Lions could not keep up with the height and strength of the Panthers.
But finals are a different kettle of fish and the Cubs kept up with the Panthers style of play.
A few of Lions were also suffering from the flu and other ailments but they showed they were there to give their all.
First quarter and the Lions had the breeze to their advantage and were behind only by a goal.
Second quarter and the Panthers took a comfortable lead kicking four to one at half time.
Third quarter and the Lions were back kicking three to Pambula two behinds.
Fourth quarter and only ten points in it, but Pambula had the puff of air and managed to kick four to Lions one.
Final score Panthers 11.9 =75 defeated Lions 7.4 = 46.
Lions goal kickers were Jedd Clothier two, Luke (Reddog) Talty two, Elliot Harper one, Alexander Jones one, and Martin Lagerenne one.
The Lions now travel to Pambula this Saturday for the Preliminary Final where they compete against the Tathra Sea Eagles.
Lions have beaten the Eagles twice this year and we should see them in the Grand Final, but as I said anything can happen come finals time.
Good Luck Boys!
Now back to the other games.
In the U17’s and the weather was turning with the cloud increasing and the breeze picking up with a wind chill factor.
The Tathra Sea Eagles were playing the Pambula Panthers and the Eagles are in the Grand Final with a thirty point win.
Final score Eagles 11.5 = 71 def Pambula 5.5 = 35.
The Reserves was a very embarrassing one sided affair, where the Bermagui Breakers took over the oval and the Batemans Bay Sea Hawks could not manage to score a goal.
My five bobs worth and I think the best players for the Hawks were reserved for the Seniors.
Final score Breakers 11.9 = 75 defeated Hawks 0.5 = 5.
The Seniors and the wind chill factor turned to freezer level. Some predicted that this game would go the Panthers way.
But the Batemans Bay Sea Hawks proved why they have won this flag in previous years as they outplayed and outshone the Panthers regardless of the weather conditions.
Final score Sea Hawks 24.9 = 153 defeated Panthers 14.15 = 99.
The Panthers looked lost for words after the game but they could reverse it this Saturday on home turf against the Merimbula Diggers.
But then they have to face the Bay again in the grand final.
What a cruel world it can be at times but for the third time anything can happen come finals.
A big thank you to the same familiar faces who helped out on the ground, in the canteen, bar and barbecue.
Thanks also to Bega SES who helped with the gate and the Brogan Family with St Johns Ambulance.
