DESPITE being one of the smallest clubs in NSW, the Bermagui Surf Life Saving Club achieved some excellent results at the Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Savings Championships held recently at South West Rocks.
The Stramit NSW Country Championships is one of the biggest events on the NSW surf sports calendar, and is one of the largest surf carnivals in the world.
The Championships attracts about 2000 competitors, making it one of the largest Surf Life Saving carnivals nationally, only surpassed in size by the NSW and Queensland State titles and the Australian Championships.
The club was represented by Maddy Jackson and Madeleine Charlton-Owen, both who were competing as seniors for the first time at a Surf Life Saving carnival.
Maddy Jackson had to overcome disappointment after she missed her surf swim event due to it beginning outside its scheduled time.
However, being keen to participate, Maddy borrowed a board and entered the U15 Iron Woman event. Maddy completed an arduous board and swim leg and still managed to be smiling at the end of the event.
She finished in 15th place in one of the most challenging events at the carnival.
Madeleine Charlton-Owen continued her domination of the beach sprint event claiming the gold medal in the U15 Female Beach Sprint.
Madeleine remains undefeated in the beach sprint having now won the event for the last three years.
For the first time in a major carnival, Madeleine also competed in her least favoured event, the Beach Flags. She had no expectations of any success and was therefore thrilled to take out the bronze medal in this sometimes-harrowing event.
Madeleine will continue to train with her sprint coach Jamie Costin who's assistance she has been extremely grateful for in the lead up to the Country Titles.
Both Madeleine and Maddy intend to compete at the NSW State Surf Life Saving titles at Newcastle in late February.
