The combined South East Representative Cricket team played the first round of the Southern Zone Burns Cup match against Shoalhaven last Sunday at Kyla Park Tuross Head.
Batting first, the visiting Shoalhaven line-up managed to amass seven for 176 from their allotted 50 overs. Aaron Basile and Jonathan Hill scored 53 not out and 48 runs respectively for the visitors against some tight and at times unlucky South East bowling.
Dalmeny's Simon Mackie returned the best bowling figures for South East with three for 44 off nine overs. Eden's Matt Bell finished withtwo for 33 from nine overs and Bay Cavalier's Tim Hartshorn bowled with little luck for tidy figures of one for 15 from 10 overs.
South East's run chase was hampered early as the Shoalhaven bowlers made early inroads into the South East top order. Tathra's Ben O'Reilly was the only top order batsman to make his mark scoring a quick fire 56 at number four, which included a four and a six from his first two deliveries. Pambula's Hayden Nichols showed maturity beyond his years to help steady the South East innings with a well compiled 19. South East was looking in dire trouble after losing nine wickets with over 50 runs required to pass the Shoalhaven score. Simon Mackie (27 not out) and Tathra's Ben "Legs Eleven" Fielding (22) tried their hardest for the final wicket, but fell 10 runs short of the Shoalhaven score. South East all out for 166.
The South East team travels to the Illawarra this Sunday for their second round match against favourites South Coast. At this stage, there are two changes with Bay Cavaliers Anthony Hartshorn replacing Tathra's Rob Stevenson and Tathra's 14 year old wizz kid joining the squad.
Eurobodalla Junior Cricket
WITH the junior cricket season starting on October 24 numbers of registered players are down on what we had last season. One factor that may have something to do with this is the misconception that the U16 competition is full of 15 to 16 year old players. This is far from fact. With only around seven or eight players in the entire association left from last seasons U16 competition we are looking for the players coming out of last seasons U13s to make up the U16 competition. With the cost of having to change premiership shields being to excessive this seasons U16 competition is in fact really an U14 comp with the few of last season's players helping to make up the numbers.
All of the most talented junior players in the U16 age group are now either playing A or B Grade standard of cricket and have done so for the previous two or three years .We are trying to encourage all junior cricketers to stay in the game and to help improve their skill level at the same time. We have been holding some coaching sessions over the last few weeks and we will be continuing to do so during the school holidays along with selecting teams to play in rep trial games on October 18 and November 1, all of which are in Batemans Bay.
We are fielding teams in the U12, U14 and U16 age groups against South Coast on October 18 and the same against Crookwell on November 1. This is the first time we have had the opportunity to have trial games before the rep season starts early in November which should improve our chances of having much better results than we have had in the past. But we cannot do this unless the juniors are going to turn up and play cricket.
All of the juniors from last season's U13 competition will be playing against the same kids as they played last season in what was the highest standard of U13 cricket the association has seen, with the top four teams being able to either beat or push last seasons U16s team to the limit, that is not to put down the U16s it just shows where the U13s were at last season and where they could go this season. With more opportunities for young players to make either Southern Zone teams or being invited to compete in other carnivals like the one in Bowral that we took a team to this year or Orange where we have been invited to take an U13 and U15 teams to in January.
For all cricketers to register contact Viv Sethi in Batemans Bay, Brett Woolridge or Gerry Coloe Broulee, David Paisley Topp Moruya, Boyd Brennan Tuross, Andrew Preston Bodalla, Julian Armstrong Dalmeny, Darren Redman Bermagui and Paul Schaefer Dalmeny in age groups from cricket U10s, U13s and U16s which is basically an U14 competition.
Dalmeny cricket report
WELL the footy season is over and the Dalmeny cricket team has once again started its drive for a premiership. The boy's first game was against Tuross with the rain playing its part. The game was held at Bodalla. Some new faces, old faces and new recruits and it was game time.
Dalmeny won the toss and sent Tuross into bat. Simon Mackie... boom, took control immediately taking three quick wickets to have Tuross struggling at 3-10. To their credit they fought back and put on a 63 run partnership. Then the old warhorse Matt Corbett struck twice. Turnouts 5-80 at drinks. The lads returned to the field trying to keep Turnouts under 150. Kyle Field struck next, and then Matt Corbett and Simon Mackie cleaned up the tail. Hans Gunthorpe bowled tightly and Pete Breust tried hard at the other end. Turnouts all out for 123. Bowling figures Simon Mackie 6/29/8.2, Matt Corbett 3/13/7, Hans Gunthorpe 0/19/4, Pete Breust 0/13/4, Kyle Field 1/25/8, Robbie Brown 0/15/3.
So the chase 124 of 45 over's. Billy Wright and Robbie Brown opened the innings playing some good shots. Until Billy was bowled for nine and Rob was caught for 10, Pete Breust came for a quick 12 and Jordy Macevoy held things together until he was caught for three. With Dalmeny 4/49 a few nerves went through the camp but with Simon Mackie out there and Matt Corbett the boys both played extremely well and brought the target of 124 up in the 23rd over. Simon scoring 52 not out and Matt Corbett 30 not out. A great effort by both of the boys. A great individual effort by Simon Mackie and a great team effort by the boys to get the season off with a win.
