George Bass Marathon begins this weekend

30 Dec, 2009 02:14 PM
THE George Bass Marathon (GBM) is a gruelling seven-day rowing event that is renowned for being the toughest and longest open water surfboat race in the world.

The Bass begins this Sunday from 8am under Batemans Bay Bridge.

Surfboat crews from all over many states of Australia and even two International crews will travel from Batemans Bay to Eden covering some 190+kms over seven days, with crews rowing one leg each day.

Narooma has a Veterans Men's Crew, and an Open Women's Crew entered, some crewmembers have rowed/swept many Basses, and for many, this is their first one.

The men's crew is made up of Unto Holopainen (9th), Graeme Sawyer (4th), Steve Dobson (2nd), Brendan Constable (2nd), Spike Wilton (2nd), Johnny Davis (debut), Craig Herman (2nd), Jason Hextell (2nd) and is swept by seasoned rower and sweep, Max Young (10+!).

The women's crew are; Ange O'Brien (2nd), Sham Eichmann (2nd), Cherene Stokes (debut), Tania Hextell (2nd), Sharelle Herman (debut), Sue Lawson (2nd), Lin Wilton (2nd), Leigh Anne Sydenham (debut), Lisa Davis (debut) and is swept by Mick Young (5th).

All the crewmembers attended a pre-race briefing at Catalina Country Club on Saturday to run through safety, rules and recommendations.

Duck drivers Matt Dobson and Tim Keegan will be out there working hard, as will support boat skippers - Stretch Mumme, Tony Lawson and Pete Davies.

About 50 people make up the support crew with major logistics - catering, food and drink prep for crews, duck drivers and support boats, car movements, boat launches, camp site set ups and masseurs.

Huge club and community support to make the event happen for Narooma crews. A big thank you to all those who have and will give up their festive season time to assist with the Bass. Greatly appreciated and both crews are hoping to do everyone proud throughout the event.
