Narooma Dragons fly at Jindabyne

A WET Jindabyne Dragon Boat Regatta held on Valentine's Day, which this year coincided with the beginning of Chinese New Year, provided the first test for the Narooma paddlers.

Even though training only started six weeks ago, Narooma's Flying Dragons have come on in leaps and bounds and in combination with their Sydney teammates were able to pit themselves against the best of experienced teams.

Dragon Boat racing is usually closely contested and the Jindabyne Regatta was no exception. The combined team of Narooma and Sydney paddlers did us proud by taking home a Silver Medal in the Open's final.

In a controversial photo finish, the Premier Mixed team had everyone expecting another Silver but official video footage had the Narooma team edged out of the medals with a fourth placing.

The Masters Women's' team after a nervous start returned to post a fantastic time in the second heat narrowly missing the finals. The race experience will be invaluable for future events.

All team members thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can't wait for the next regatta. President and head coach of Flying Dragons Narooma, Ghena El Mohamad, was impressed with the teams' performances as well as the strong spirit that has developed within the club.

"Our paddlers have exceeded any expectations I had going into our first regatta, to be able to hold our own alongside the current national champions was just phenomenal," she said.
