Narooma's top ranking golfer is best in Australia

NAROOMA golfer Sylvia Donohoe is the best senior female golfer in Australia.

She won the Australian Women's Senior Amateur Championship title played at the Royal Fremantle Golf Club in Western Australia in late October.

This is Mrs Donohoe's sixth Australian Women's Senior Amateur Championship title after she defeated Wollongong Golf Club's Lynne Townsend on the 18th hole.

The match was all square through nine holes when Mrs Donohoe got two up after the 13th and led by one playing the 18th hole. Ms Townsend got into trouble on the 18th and a two putt was enough for Mrs Donohoe to secure victory.

With her caddie Pat on the bag, it was revenge for Mrs Donohoe after Townsend defeated her in the semi-finals of the NSW Women's Senior Amateur earlier in the year.

Mrs Donohoe also came away with a first in the Interstate Stroke Teams Event playing with Lynne Townsend from Wollongong Golf Club and Annette Baggie from Avondale Golf Club. The NSW team returned an aggregate score of 329, to beat ACT, WA and QLD who all finished on 339.

Vera Krizaic from the ACT had the shot of the tournament with a hole in one on the 133 metres third hole.

The Royal Fremantle Golf is described as being one of the few golf clubs that still occupies its original site. The course can be tamed on a still day, but when the prevailing sea breeze colloquially called the 'Fremantle Doctor' arrives after midday, only the best swings survive.

Mrs Donohoe started playing golf when she was 13 years old. Born in Narooma she attended Narooma Public School with the golf club across the road.

At the age of 17 she left Narooma to play golf and work in Sydney.

"I was young and I had bills to pay so golf was left behind for a time while I worked," Mrs Donohoe said.

At the age of 39, she represented NSW at a senior level and played in the State side for six years until she retired from representative golf.

Normally prior to a tournament Mrs Donohoe would practice for three months before hand, however before the Australian Women's Senior Amateur Championship she said she had very little practice.
