Surf Club news - Pambula surfboat race

04 Nov, 2009 08:53 AM
SURF boat crews from around NSW and Victoria will converge on Pambula Beach this weekend, for the opening round of the Warrilla Bowls Surfboat Series; the first time an event of this size has been held at Pambula.

A total of 50 crews have registered for the event, with organisers from host club Pambula hoping for good weather and reasonable swell to showcase the exciting spectacle of surfboat rowing action.

The event has attracted entries from as far south as Lakes Entrance, who have registered their ladies masters crew who took gold in the World Masters Games recently, while the Batemans Bay ladies masters crew who contested the finals in the same event, will also be down to compete.

"There are a lot of talented crews registered and we are looking forward to some great surf rowing competition this Saturday", Pambula SLSC secretary and organising panel member, Stuart Manson said.

"This is a first for Pambula SLSC. Having 50 surfboat crews competing at one carnival over an eight hour period will certainly be a spectacle".

In its 10th season, the series attracts crews in the under 19, open ladies, and open, reserve and veterans male categories. For surf life saving clubs outside the metropolitan area, the series is an opportunity to put their skills and training to the test without travelling the long distances to Sydney and beyond to compete.

Stuart said it was Pambula along with other crews from the Far South Coast who made the effort to support the series when held in the South Coast area, over many years that saw Pambula selected as a possible host for the event.

"With our new clubhouse operational, easy access to a beach with reasonably challenging surf conditions, and accommodation close-by, Pambula SLSC was able to secure one of the three rounds to be held this season", Stuart said.

Action will get underway with the initial heats starting at 10.30am. The finals will start at around 2pm, with action winding up at about 5pm.

"We will have a barbecue running all day, then presentations and dinner for the crews in the clubhouse from about 6pm. All-in-all we are looking at a fantastic day of surfboat action which the public is invited to come along and be part of".

Bronze Medallion Course - starts

The club is holding a Bronze medallion course at the clubhouse from 6pm on Monday, November 16. Anybody wishing to gain their Bronze (this will enable you to do undertake lifesaving surf patrols, qualify to compete at carnivals, and seek employment as a paid lifeguard, as well as a nationally recognised qualification), upgrade from a (cadets) Surf Rescue Certificate or requalify after gaining your Bronze many years ago are all encouraged to join in. Minimum age is 15 years and the pre-requisite for the course is a completed timed pool swim (400M in under nine minutes). The course is run by qualified trainers and assessors and covers many topics. At the completion of the course you have Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue). To enrol or gain more information, please call Linda Wilton 0423 056 468 or Steve Dobson 44763 577.

Meet & Greet for all patrolling members

As we have lots of new faces in the club, we thought it would beneficial to have a meet, greet and exchange night on Saturday, November 14 from 6pm at the clubhouse. It will be a casual night for all patrolling members to meet and greet their fellow patrol members and also other patrol members, club committee and officials (sorry - no partners or kids - unless they are a patrolling member). Dinner is fish, chips and salad and cost $10 per head. Bar is open at reasonable prices. It is also requested that everyone bring along their patrol uniforms (you don't have to wear them), as there is a new rollout of patrolling uniforms due to sponsorship changes. Members will be issued new uniforms on the night after relinquishing old ones. RSVP to Club Captain Glenn Bywater - 0412 209 710or email belinda.brice@southernphone.com.a u

IRB Crewperson or Upgrade to Driver Certification Course

There is an inflatable rubber duck (IRB) course held in Narooma on Friday, November 13 from 5pm (Theory) and Saturday, November 14 all day (Practical). Advise Dobbo ASAP if you would like to attend. Pre-requisite for this course is Bronze Medallion. Catering is provided - Friday dinner, Saturday brekkie, lunch and afternoon tea. Get your names in now!

Car Boot Sale - spaces available

Do you have any trash or treasure you want to get rid of and convert to cash? We will be having another Car Boot Sale on Sunday, December 6 in the car park at the Surf Club from 9am. Only $10 per car. Call or email Tania Hextell 4476 5052 / hextell@bigpond.com to book.

Age managers wanted - Could you help out with the Nipper kids?

The nippers program is run by volunteer parents and helpers. We are seeking help from willing people to be an age manager or assistant. You don't need a bronze medallion, just loads of enthusiasm and to be reliable and diligent. Even Surf Club cadets can take a group if they are dedicated. Call Nippers Coordinator Sherri Herman on 44761815.

For more information on any club issue, please contact: President - Steve Dobson on 4476 3577, Secretary - Tania Hextell on 44765 052, Club Captain Glenn Bywater - 0412 209 710.
