The Boys are back in town

27 Aug, 2008 04:10 PM
Narooma Booma Leroy Brown and trainer Ziggy were back in town on the weekend training at the boxing gym.

Brown will return to the ring after being sidelined for the last 13 months due to injury, and is happy with his progress following knee surgery ten weeks ago.

Brown will fight in Sydney on September 12 against New Zealand’s Paz Viejo, who is having his 40th Pro fight, and recently went seven rounds with arguably the hardest puncher on the planet, former world champion Maselino Masoe.

Ziggy said Brown’s preparation has been patchy, the knee didn’t heal as fast as he would have liked, but feels Leroy will handle the tough Kiwi on the night.

“All I want is for Leroy to taste the ring again, he’s been out to long. I’m not expecting a super performance, not expecting him to knock Paz out, just want him to see the rounds out, and feel the ropes again”.

‘Boomer’ is booked to defend his NSW middleweight title October 31 at the Nowra Entertainment Centre, against former Australian boxing champion and world kickboxing champion Steve Douet.

“That will be a tough fight for Leroy, he will have to be better then his best to get over Steve.

A huge step up in class for Leroy, but he has to take these steps to progress, and he is more then capable” said Ziggy.

Ziggy predicts the Douet fight will be a turning point in Leroy’s career.

He believes Leroy will handle Douet, and has started making plans for a big fight for him in December.

“Once he beats Douet, he will be mentally strong, and I believe this fight will make him.

Once he is mentally tough, there will be no middleweight in this country that he won’t beat, I am quite confident of that”.

Ziggy has already started to call out Indian boxer Pradeep Singh, and has had discussions with his management.

Pradeep is a 21 year old multiple National Champion who represented his country here in Australia at the Commonwealth Games.

He is undefeated in 14 professional fights, knocking out eight of his opponents, and is a Main Event Foxsports boxer.

“That is the fighter I want in the opposite corner when Leroy fights for the WBO APWorld Youth Title” said Ziggy.

The title fight has been booked for Narooma December 6.

Ziggy said he needs the support of the community to bring the World Youth Title here, and emphasises it belongs here.

Shannan Taylor has also committed to defend his Title on the card, which will feature a sensational undercard including Olympians and our ‘home grown’ talents.

Ziggy will be contacting our business community over the next month to try and get support for the show.

He is asking for local businesses to purchase VIP Tables as Christmas party’s for their workers.
