Seahorse Classic Tournament

30 Nov, 2011 11:44 AM
WET and windy conditions on Saturday morning unfortunately saw play abandoned for the first round of the Narooma Ladies Seahorse Classic; an annual 36-hole stroke event normally conducted over two days.

Visitors from 24 clubs were disappointed to miss a day’s play on the magnificent course, but local shops, cafes and other businesses surely did not miss out with around 140 ladies at a loose end for the day.

Sunday provided contrasting conditions and, apart from a couple of brief showers, the ladies played in favourable conditions. The course was in outstanding condition thanks to the hard work of the course superintendent Richard Goodridge, his team of dedicated staff and the tireless work of the course volunteers.

The tournament was reduced to an 18-hole event but that didn't stop the visitors and locals alike enjoying their time on Narooma golf course.

Silvia Donohoe dominated the field as the Division 1 Scratch winner with a score of 73 strokes from Chris Taylor, from Belconnen in the ACT, with 85.

Chris Edwards from Moruya took out the Division 1 Nett trophy with an impressive round, while Narooma’s own Dorelle Monteith earned the Veterans trophy.

Narooma golfers were well represented across the tournament with Leone Whelan taking out the Narooma Bowl, while other locals were also successful in all the grades.

Sue Bramston (St Georges Basin) and Edith Jones (Moruya) were the respective scratch winners in Divisions 2 and 3 while Narooma's Marg Fergus and Bettina Wilson took the nett honours in their grades.

We had two juniors play in our tournament and both took home trophies with Courtney Miller from Belconnen being the scratch runner-up in Division 3 and Jessica McManus from Capital winning both the junior trophy and the Division 1 longest drive.

The success of the tournament was in no small part due to the tireless work of the ladies committee and the support of volunteers including the spotters who, among other tasks, ensured those stray shots did not stay lost for long.

We all look forward to next year’s tournament and hope the weather is a little kinder to us and the field is of similar size.
