Dalmeny’s Margie Brown up until a few weeks ago had never lawn bowled before but she was introduced to the sport by her new friend Sharyn Renshaw, who has represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games and is a current state selector for the NSW junior bowls team.
Sharyn’s mother used to live in Dalmeny but just passed away. Living next door was Margie, who together with her family took it up herself to look after their elderly neighbour as her daughter Sharyn lived up in Sydney.
The pair has become good friends now and last week they decided to compete together in the Autumn Carnival with Sharyn coming down just to pair with her novice friend.
Margie is now a member of the Dalmeny Bowling Club, but only really had a couple of practice sessions before the carnival.
Sharyn, who represented Australia at the Delhi Commonwealth Games and now plays for the St John’s club, said anyone could take up lawn bowls regardless of their age.
“We’d love to see more young people here,” she said.
“The old stigma of it being an ‘old people’s game’ really irritates me.
“There are so many opportunities for young people now and you can wear bright colours and have your own music over the loudspeakers – kids love it.”
She also thanked the community for being so welcoming and helpful in the difficult days before and after her mother passed away.
Everyone from the local bank manager to pharmacist went out of their way to help her, she said.

Narooma men’s bowls - Classic Pairs 2012
WE had three days of intense competition as teams of bowlers from all around NSW and Victoria played six rounds of pairs to try and win the big money on offer. The winners were Phil Burns from Tomakin and Les Vincent (skip) from Huskisson who won five of their matches and had an overall winning margin of 42 shots, second were Geoff Frost and Leo Gore (skip) from Peakhurst who also won five matches and had a 38 shot margin. Geoff Holt and Peter Watts (skip) from Young finished third with four wins and a draw and a 31 shot margin followed by Narooma pair, Peter Robson and Clem Hochkins (skip) on four wins and a draw and a 17 shot margin. Fifth place went to Batemans Bay pair Alan Holloway and Greg Wale (skip) with four wins and a draw and a 11 shot margin. Well done to all the teams who helped make the tournament so competitive, we look forward to seeing you back next year.
The tournament was a huge success with no teams going into the final round undefeated, showing the closeness of the competition. A tournament of this size could not be held without the generous sponsorship of the Narooma Sporting and Services Club and their sponsorship is much appreciated. The assistance of Pat, John and Neville who did all the work in the background helped to make the tournament run smoothly, thanks guys. Thanks to the umpires for their diligent service, the hard working ladies from the Narooma Women's Bowling Club for their assistance and for providing afternoon nibbles for the players. Thanks to Chef Ray Fellows and assistant Don Williams who provided the usual succulent hamburgers and steak sandwiches to feed the starving hordes. Thank you to the Bowlo office and bar staff who catered for all the needs of the bowlers. In particular a big thank you to the very able Green's staff for producing the greens in such great order, many of the visitors commented on how well the greens were running.
To Ponder
My wife says I never listen to her. At least I think that’s what she said.
