On tsunami alert, Watson secretly slips away

01 Oct, 2009 11:00 AM
Schoolgirl skipper Jessica Watson has quietly slipped out of the Gold Coast ahead of her controversial solo around-the-world sailing attempt.

The 16-year-old evaded the media glare this morning as she departed from a family friend's private pontoon in Runnaway Bay about 5.30am.

Watson's sloop, Ella's Pink Lady, is expected to arrive in Sydney on Monday ahead of her official departure on her solo challenge.

The teenage adventurer's spokesman Andrew Fraser said Watson was certainly keen to leave behind the media storm that had followed her of late.

"That was part of the strategy," Mr Fraser told brisbanetimes.com.au.

"Jessi ca had a good night's rest and was up first thing this morning, itching to go. She was very anxious to get going yesterday morning, but her family wanted her to have one more good night's sleep."

Watson yesterday conducted sea trials of her yacht Ella's Pink Lady off the Gold Coast after repairs following her collision with 63,000-tonne cargo vessel off North Stradbroke Island on September 9.

Mr Fraser said the tests had shown the repairs had been successful and new equipment worked well.

"The main purpose to go out was not so much to test the sails and rigging, because we knew that would all be okay and it was, but the communications and radar equipment is a crucial component and ... everything is working very well," he said.

"The boat is in great working order and Jessica is in great spirits."

Upon her arrival in Sydney, Watson will attend some promotional events and have cameras fitted to the yacht to shoot a documentary

"After seeing how everything comes up after a four or five day sea trial and fine tunings in Sydney, Jess can get some more rest and when things are right and the weather window is good and hopefully all the tsunamis have gone she will head off," Mr Fraser said.

He said he understood the tsunamis affecting the South Pacific would not impact on the journey.

Jessica has been under pressure to abandon her gruelling 27,000 nautical mile around-the-world voyage after the crash.

Premier Anna Bligh, her deputy Paul Lucas and a slew of yachting experts have claimed she is not experienced enough for the quest after a preliminary report by Maritime Safety Queensland questioned her preparedness.

But Mr Fraser said she remained "100 per cent committed" to the record attempt.

Yesterday, Virgin boss and veteran adventurer Sir Richard Branson wished her well for the trip, saying it was more dangerous to cross the road than sail around the world.

"She's 16; she's not a baby any more," he said in Brisbane.

"I left school at 15 and started my own business. At 16 you are pretty grown up; she should go for it.

"It's risky, but it could be risky walking over the road, it's risky in cars, it's risky on bicycles.

"She'll have the adventure of a lifetime you only live once and live life to the full."

She has obvious demonstrated deficiencies in experience. To let someone still embark on a fool hardy expedition like this leaves me cold. When she is caught in a cyclonic sea we will be expected to rescue her. I think the authorities should impose a bond of about a half million dollars on these lone adventurers. It should be paid up front before they are allowed to leave and it can partly go towards the cost of rescue without removing the balance of the liability for the total cost.

I be suprised if she doesn't make it a multi million dollar rescue at sea...paid for by the taxpayer.
