WELL-TRAVELLED jockey Peter Robl heads to Wyong today, confident of reaping a pre-Christmas bonanza.
The Central Coast track hosts a couple of lead-up races for next month's lucrative Magic Millions day on the Gold Coast.
The two-year-olds' Wyong Slipper is worth $200,000, while the three-year-olds vie for $100,000 in the Magic Millions Stakes, the same prize the fillies and mares contest in the Mona Lisa Stakes.
"In the three main races I've three very good rides," Robl said at Rosehill yesterday.
In the juveniles' race Robl rides the Bart Cummings-trained Shamash, which was scratched from an engagement at Rosehill.
"He is a very nice ride, trialled enormous at Randwick a couple of weeks ago," Robl said.
"They scratched him from today to take him to Wyong tomorrow and he'll be more than competitive."
The 1000m dash has attracted only seven runners, and Robl has no doubt this is a bonus for a first-starter.
"It will suit him, he'll race in the one-two position, I'd imagine," he said. "He is nicely bred, a nice type of horse. A good type, very correct, very straight, everything he has done from day one, he has improved on.
"I don't think he'll have any problems, he'll race professionally."
In the three-year-olds' race, Robl takes the ride on the Anthony Cummings-trained Swarm and warned to look past the colt's debut last at Kembla back in early August.
"He was beaten a furlong at Kembla but he was probably a bit shin sore," Robl said.
"He is well bred, out of a good mare. He trialled terrific at Rosehill and the breeding suggests he is going to be a good horse.
"Hopefully, Wyong is the first step in him achieving it."
Robl's booking to ride Mary's Grace in the Mona Lisa Stakes arrived after rival jockey Grant Buckley injured himself in the barriers at Thursday night's Canterbury meeting.
"It looks a very good ride," Robl said. "She races forward on the speed, which is always a bonus at Wyong.
"Unfortunate for Grant, but I'm happy to pick up the ride and hopefully we can sneak that one home as well. The Christmas stockings need filling."
