Ryles leaving for France with parting medal

09 Oct, 2008 09:55 AM

Jason Ryles will have a bit of extra luggage when he moves to France to take up a Super League contract next month - his third Dragons Medal.

Ryles, who will relocate to France to start a three-year deal with English Super League club Les Catalans, was named St George Illawarra's 2008 player of the year in a presentation at the Lagoon Restaurant last night.

The former Berkeley junior was also named the Dragons' player of the year in 2001 and 2006 - in the latter season he shared the award with Mark Gasnier, who is now in France playing rugby union.

Ryles, 29, played 23 games for the Dragons this year and edged 2007 winner Ben Creagh, Bulldogs-bound Josh Morris, Ben Hornby and Justin Poore for the joint venture club's top playing honour.

Poore, a Helensburgh junior, received the Immortals Trophy, which is selected by the Dragons Immortals Reg Gasnier, Graeme Langlands and John Raper in conjunction with the Dragons' NRL coaching staff.

The 23-year-old also took home the Mark Coyne Award for Career Development after setting up a personal training business in the Illawarra.

Five-eighth Jamie Soward was the people's choice for the Red V Members Player of the Year award.

Kiama junior Josh Morris won the Geoff Selby Memorial NRL Coaches Award, as chosen by the NRL coaching staff.

Morris played 23 games for the club this year and scored the highest number of tries, with 14.

Promising prop Trent Merrin received the Paul McGregor Toyota Cup Player of the Year Award.

The Shellharbour junior was instrumental up front for the Toyota Cup side, which came within seconds of qualifying for the under 20 competition's grand final.
