Entangled seal monitored at Tuross

NATIONAL Parks rangers will continue to monitor the young fur seal inside Tuross Lake that has rope or netting tangled around its neck.

Ranger Ross Constable said attempts were made to get close to the seal yesterday but it was very active and fishing, with no apparent ill-effects.

The seal was first spotted in the lake earlier this week and Mr Constable said it was not usual for seals to enter estuaries for the easy fishing.

If the seal’s health did deteriorate, then rangers and a vet would make another attempt to capture and cut off the rope, he said.

In the meantime, it was hoped the rope that had already cut into the animal’s skin would break free of its own accord.
