Narooma News editorial: Feb. 13

WE received the usual pressure not to publicise an accident on the bar with tourism operators worried about the reputation of the town and scaring visitors away.

But this latest incident saw a crowd gather and footage has even made it to a commercial television station, so our news article and front page is not going to make that much difference.

This story is also different in that this little boat was out there for an unbelievable three to four hours!

While those gathered on the headland and break-wall were obviously aware of the boaters’ predicament, the powers that be apparently remained unaware.

Ultimately it is the fault of anyone who goes to sea without a radio or safety equipment, and by all accounts these were particularly stubborn fishermen not willing to entertain the idea of leaving their boat behind in the interest of their own safety.

If it makes Narooma feel any better, Bermagui’s bar was pretty atrocious over the weekend and footage of the charter boat in trouble on that bar also getting a bit of attention.
