Although it was a quick one day trip, Graham said it was a wonderful experience to walk on the ice and to meet those who are based there and to hear about living and working in such a remote place.
The flight took the Governor General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO to the Antarctic - and in doing so she became the first Australian Governor-General to travel to Antarctica.
Her Excellency unveiled a plaque in honour of the Mawson who led an expedition one hundred years ago.
She paid tribute to Mawson’s courage in adversity, his dedication to scientific exploration and his foresight in recognising the significance of Antarctic science not just to Australia but to the rest of the world.
