Scotty “Hollywood” Peterson, from Goodooga landed this huge Mako shark fishing with his mate Jeremy Norris on “Playstation” out of Narooma. Scotty is pictured here with the big fish – which was too big to get into the boat – with skipper Ben Boulton and deckhands Tim and Adam.
Jeremy said the boys had come down from Orange to try and catch kingfish and hopefully a marlin “if we were lucky”. They chartered the boat for two days and after a pretty quiet day on Tuesday of last week headed out earlier on Wednesday to give them more of a chance of catching something. They left port at about 6am and had a couple of hours out at Montague Island catching some good snapper and a reef fish.
“Then we decided to head out and chase some Marlin,” Jeremy said. “After a couple of hours one of the reels started screaming and we discovered that ‘Mickey’ the Mako had taken one of the live baits we were using for the Marlin.
“After an amazing acrobatic display of Mickey jumping at least 30ft in the air the battle begun and Scotty hooked up into the harness and started winding in the big shark.”
Two-and-a-half hours later, with very sore shoulders the fight came to an end and the big Mako was secured fast to the stern of the boat. Scotty a 37-year-old professional cowboy usually acquainted to riding bare back broncos, was ecstatic to have caught the big shark.
He goes into the running to win this month’s $30 voucher from Darryl at the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler, which will be drawn at the end of the month.
