THIS year’s Narooma Flathead Challenge was another success attracting lots of visiting anglers with several big fish landed despite the threatening weather.

The 205 anglers in 72 teams targeted dusky flathead on Wagonga Inlet using lures and releasing all fish after measurement.
Organiser Graeme Dawson said the fishing on Sunday morning was delayed due to lightning, but a vote was taken and the anglers, many of whom had travelled from afar, decided to continue fishing once the storm had passed.
The winning flathead from Saturday was this 91cm fish caught on a Shimano blade by Tom Boynton of Canberra on Team Super Savers.
On Sunday, the Biggest Flathead award was shared by Andrew Dorman from Team Dorman and Craig Tooker from Team Northern Invasion who both happened to land a 93cm dusky.
The overall points award went to Team Fresh Fillets from Junee who racked up the most fish centimetres over the two days. Team members were Nick and Sam Jeffery and Rodney and Cameron Hands.
The best junior fish went to Will Longmire of Junee, while the best woman’s fish went to Sharon Tooker from Team Northern Invasion.
The best bycatch award on Day 1 went to local Dean Loudoun for his 38cm bream, while on Day 2 Reece Kane took the award with his whopper 42cm bream.
The best presented boat was Team Thick and Thin while the best dressed team was Team Borat from Yass.
The challenge also saw $1402 collected from the “Guess how many Squidgies in a jar” competition donated to the Starlight Foundation.
Graeme Dawso thanked Stuart Hindson from Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures for being a major sponsor and the judge.
Plenty of XXXX Gold Lager was drunk at the host Obrien’s Hotel, while gear and prizes was donated by Shimano Australia, Minn Kota/BLA, Jamo’s Auto Pro and Black Bream Point Holiday Cabins.
Other sponsors were Eurobodalla Weed Control, Cooinda Holiday Units, Raw Prawn Bistro, Ocean Hut Compleat Angler Narooma and Bill Dudley’s Narooma Barbecue Boats.
