IN the last couple of months Narooma and its surrounds have been hit by a drought and timing of the rain that was welcomed by most on Saturday resulted in the U15 Narooma Lions grand final failure of a fairy tale finish. The trip down to Berrimbool Oval Merimbula was one of excitement and the talk was all Lions and smiles and a 17 year Grand Final drought that was supposed to be in the bag was meant to be broken. But Mother Nature decided to take charge and the Diggers on home turf and fitness for such conditions was going to be the resulting factor.
The first quarter and it was a hard fought battle for both sides and the Lions and the Diggers defended their opposing forward pockets with no score recorded until three minutes 30 seconds on the clock the Diggers scored the first with a major. With only 10 seconds to go before the quarter siren the Lions responded with a major as well and the scores were six a piece at quarter time.
Start of the second quarter the rain which started as a sprinkle was now coming down and the Diggers lifted with accurate scoring shots and went into half time with an 11 point lead.
Third quarter and even though the Lions were winning in the ruck the Diggers were able to take possession and edged ahead, adding another three goals against the Lions by three quarter time.
The fourth and final quarter and with only 15 minutes to go the Lions struggled with heavy legs, heavy jumpers and a heavy ball. They tried but didn’t make 2013 their year for a grand final finish. Final score Lions 5.3. = 33 to Diggers 10.3 = 63.
Not the fairy tale ending that the Narooma Lions Football Club hoped for in 2013 however the U15s gave it all they had and exhausted bodies showed how much effort they did put into the game and all should be commended for their endeavours.
