The first task of the partnership group is to recruit a club manager to lead the development of the service across the shires.
Two small offices will be established in Narooma and Bega, while two NSW Police Force Youth Command youth case managers have already been appointed and will be focusing on case management of young offenders and will use both offices.
Unlike a traditional PCYC that has premises, the “club” will be a virtual one – its activities will stretch across the communities in the two council areas.
The activities will be chosen based on three criteria:
* Interest from the community and its young people
* Availability of volunteers from that community to assist, including as instructors
* Viability of the activity, not least through use of volunteers
Both councils and the police are now seeking support from interested community members to become PCYC volunteers to assist in the running of activities such as boxing, boxing for fitness, martial arts (judo, taekwondo, wrestling depending on availability of graded instructors), PCYC self-defence, archery, small sided football or touch competitions, safer driver classes, Blue Light dances, and voice classes.
Volunteers may also be needed for formal team competitions. The PCYC will provide volunteers with accredited training.
Young people are also to be encouraged to participate in PCYC’s Blue Star citizenship and leadership programs that involve volunteer hours in a local activity.
It is hoped that a community forum will be held in November with the CEO of PCYC NSW to develop the framework, committees and programs to get the club up and running.
