THE Narooma Numnutz winter swimming team was stoked to finish 12th out of 21 teams in the relay event at the Winter Swimming Association of Australia (WSAA) national championships held in Perth.
The team has finished last in the previous two national championships so finishing mid-pack was a great accomplishment, especially against the big city teams such as the Bondi Icebergs and Cronulla Polar Bears whose members swim timed laps each weekend.
The Numnutz don’t swim laps in a pool, ocean or otherwise, instead swimming Wagonga Inlet each Sunday over the winter.
The other teams competing in this year’s championships were North Narrabeen Shivering Sharks, Maroubra Seals, Somerset Sea Snakes, TH&C Dolphins, Dee Why Ice Picks, Harbord Frigid Frogs, Gold Coast Marlins, Umina Blue Swimmers, Clovelly Eskimos, Stockton Jellyblubbers, Fremantle Shivering Shags, South Maroubra Dolphins and the Balmain Kool Kats.
Hosting the event were the Cottesloe Crabs, which loaned three of its veteran swimmers to the Numnmutz to make up a team of 10.
The event took place at the Cottesloe Crabs’ home venue, the outdoor pool area at Challenge Stadium on Sunday, September 15.
A number of Numnutz also swam in the individual timed events but failed to qualify for the finals.
While in Perth, the Narooma swimmers stayed at Scarborough Beach and each morning went for a swim in the surf, although a storm front that hit Perth that weekend made sure conditions were suitably rough.
The swimmers also visited a number of attractions including the Western Australia Maritime Museum, Little Creatures Brewery and Bon Scott statue, all in Fremantle.
Hosts Cottesloe Crabs also organised an excellent closing ceremony at Salt on the Beach brewery on the beach at Fremantle.
The WSAA national championships next year are in Botany Bay hosted by the association itself, so the Numnutz won’t have as far to travel.
