AT the recent Australian Masters Games held in Geelong, Southern Region Dragon Boat clubs combined to form the Southern Warriors team.
Narooma’s representative was Blue Water Dragons’ Club captain, Gilly Kearney, who trained with the Southern Warriors and competed at the Shoalhaven regatta to prepare for the games.
The Southern Warriors competed in eight events and took home six gold, a silver and a bronze.
The tremendous success at these games mirrored the impressive performance of the Southern Warriors at the last Australian Masters Games held in Adelaide where Blue Water Dragons’ paddlers brought home a swag of gold.
Gilly returned from the games full of enthusiasm having developed her skills and the friendship of her team mates.
“It is a great way to get to know other clubs and have a fantastic time,” Gilly said.
“I would have been happy with just not coming last, let alone bringing home four medals, two of which were gold. Hopefully a few more Narooma Blue Water Dragons will join me at the next Masters Games in 2015.”
The celebrations over Gilly’s success continued when Narooma’s Dragon Boat club moved into its new home, next to the Quarterdeck Café, on Riverside Drive. The day was the culmination of more than three years hard work from club members, their partners and members of the Narooma community. State member, Andrew Constance, also played an enormous part in the success of the project.
The occasion was marked by the appearance of a series of well-wishers. Club patron, Pauline Rundle, accompanied by the four legged Angus, also came by to join in the fun. Pauline’s generosity and community spirit in hosting Narooma Blue Water Dragons on her property over the last three years played an enormous part in the club’s development and set the tone for Blue Water Dragons’ future.
