FORMER Labor member for the Federal Seat of Eden Monaro Dr Mike Kelly says he will contest the seat in the Senate left vacant after Bob Carr’s shock announcement this morning.
Mr Kelly said nominations for the casual vacancy opened today and interested parties had until October 30 to nominate.
He said his reasons for contesting were that he wanted to take up to the opposition when it came to defence matters and also for issues relating to regional Australia and in particular in his former seat of Eden Monaro.
This was important for him as he planned to run as the Labor candidate against the current and newly elected Liberal member Dr Peter Hendy.
If successful in being nominated for the Senate vacancy he said he would open another office so that he could be reached by people with issues relating to how the Abbott Government was running the country.
“I also hope to bring to bear my experience in fisheries, forestry and water,” he said.
“I making the commitment to set up an office to allow people to have an alternative to the current approach by the government and in particular I want to be there for the people of Eden Monaro.”
