CONGRATULATIONS to Matt Corbett, Rob Brown and Russell Thompson on being selected to represent the South - East Team for the Burns Cup Competition held in Nowra over both days of last weekend. South East was narrowly defeated in both games, but the Southern Euro guys acquitted themselves well.
The Southern Eurobodalla Cricket Club's Under 14's Red and C Grade sides both lost in closely fought matches over the weekend. With the A Grade and the B Grade sides having a bye, it was left up to the junior pirates to fly the skull and crossbones.
In the Under 14's the Black side received a forfeit from Pambula, while the Red side travelled to Bega to take on the Bega/ Angledale side.
Southern Eurobodalla Red batted first and compiled the competitive score of 9/104 with Jamie DuField scoring a hard hitting 39 and Darcy Knight making 17 not out. In reply the Bega/ Angledale side was led well by Ben Imison who after taking three for two with the ball then took the game away from the Southern Eurobodalla side with 41 not out. The Bega / Angledale side passed the total in the 22nd over. Best with the ball for the Red side were Liam DuField 2/5 and Nick Carter 1/2. Coach Michael Hydnes believes there is plenty of improvement in the side as a couple of the better batsmen failed to fire and the bowling at times was far too wayward.
In the C Grade game Pambula batted first and made 147 in their 40 overs, with Luke Wiggins (2-15) and Peter Hancock (2-19) being the chief wicket takers. Sam Young (1-17) bowled his allotted 8 overs economically and was unlucky not to capture more wickets. Jenny O'Brien (1-12 from 5 overs) and Lachlan Brennan (1-5 from 4 overs) also impressed with the ball.
In Southern Eurobodalla's run chase, a number of batsmen made promising starts but could not go on with the job. The exception to this was Alex Filmer-Smith who single handedly held the innings together with an excellent 67 runs. This young 15-year-old batsman is showing real potential, combining deft placement for singles and hard hitting boundaries. Alex was out 20 runs short of the target score trying to go for the win. Southern Eurobodalla fell 18 runs short, being dismissed for 130.
Captain Boyd Brennan thinks a win is just around the corner, but there is still plenty of room for improvement in the batting department.
Alex was the obvious recipient of the "Shell Narooma" Player of the Match Award for this week. Thanks to this local business for their support, as well as to our other valued sponsors, NSSC, IGA, Michael's at Dalmeny and Richard Busuttil Solicitors.
Next weekend, all grades will have games: A's will be at home to Bega; B's will travel to Wolumla and C grade makes the trip to Eden. It is essential that all players are at training Thursday between 4 and 6pm so that selections for all teams can be finalised.
