THE Narooma News last week in its ongoing coverage of the International Fleet Review on Sydney harbour last week incorrectly stated the local Navy sailor Owen Gauslaa was away overseas.
He was in fact right there in the middle of the action on the harbour on his ship the HMAS Stuart.
Owen currently has the rank is Seaman, though he expects to get promoted next month to Able Seaman.
He is an electronics technician, now serving on HMAS Stuart FFH 153 where the ship’s motto is “Always prepared”.
Previously he was on HMAS Anzac, which is now in long term refit.
“It took three months earlier this year to bring the Stuart up to standard and the ship’s crew did a fantastic job to get her fighting fit,” he said.
During the fleet review, he didn't get too sail in with the fleet as his ship was loaded up with fireworks and lights but the crew was in the combined Navy march and entered teams in the sports day where they competed against other ships and countries in soccer and rugby union.
“It was a great day,” he said.
In addition to being a sailor, Owen is also a keen photographer and his work can be seen at his Facebook page called Gauslaa Photography. Click here to see the great photos!
