The Bermagui Chamber of Commerce is planning a community meeting on Monday night to gauge the feelings of business owners and the general public to the proposal.
Woolworths is proposing a 1600-square-metre free-standing supermarket plus a 70-square-metre specialty store on a vacant block on the corner of Young and Montague streets behind the Bermagui Beach Hotel.
There would also be an “on-grade” 90 space car park on site.
A Woolworth spokeswoman said this was all subject to development consent from the Bega Valley Shire Council, which could be a lengthy process.
If and when approved, there was expected to be a 12-month construction phase.
“This is a good opportunity to set up a store in area so that people do not have to travel down to Bega or up to Narooma,” she said.
“It will have a wide product range, great value and be nice and convenient.”
Chamber president Scott Bradley said the community meeting would be at 7pm on Monday at the Bermagui Country Club with all welcome.
Everyone present will be asked to give their thoughts on their proposal with the idea being to find out what the community feeling was.
“This is the biggest single development proposal in town for many years if not ever and obviously will have a major impact on existing business,” Mr Bradley said.
“There will be pros and cons and we want to get the input of our members and the community in general.”
Back in Narooma, it is unclear whether the proposed Bermagui supermarket will have any impact on the long-promised expansion or overhaul of the Woolworth at the Narooma Plaza shopping centre.
The Narooma News back in July 2009 reported that a new Woolworths was going be built to the rear of the existing Woolworths building along with a new mini major and speciality shops to complete stage 1.
A Woolworths spokesman back then said the new store would measure 3218 square metres, compared to the existing store that measures 1698 square metres.
The expansion was to have opened by Christmas 2010, but nothing has happened since.
