Eurobodalla and Bega Valley shire councils recently announced that their application for a mobile outreach model Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC) had been successful.
An opportunity to hear all about the project is being presented to the community and its leaders today at a morning tea held at Eurobodalla Shire Council in Moruya at 10.30am.
PCYC chief executive Chris Gardiner will be joined by Acting Superintendent Colin Moore of the NSW Police Youth Command to introduce PCYC and discuss the model to be delivered to Far South Coast youth.
Meanwhile, local police officers and boxing trainers in Narooma have arranged a meeting for 6.30pm this Saturday at the Narooma Sport and Leisure Centre.to get interested people together and to form a committee for the new PCYC.
Senior Constable Scott Wharf said the “Far South Coast PCYC Boxing Club” will be based at the Narooma Sports and Leisure Centre, but with the help of buses and travelling officers, the message would get out to youngsters up and down the coast.
“We’re anticipating a very strong boxing club catering to both juniors from ages 10 to 14 and seniors 14 years and older,” Senior Constable Wharfe said.
“It won’t be all fight orientated but will also be about fitness, self-confidence and self-respect.”
The idea would be to have sub-branches in other gyms in other towns while those without facilities such as the youth of Bodalla would be bussed into the Narooma Sport and Leisure Centre.
Senior Constable Wharfe is already training a group of promising boxers at a small temporary gym at the back of the Narooma police station.
These include welterweight Tommy Hofsteede of Tuross who has two fights under his belt, heavyweight Simon Davies of Batemans Bay and most recently Canadian school teacher Karen Bugelli.
Karen is currently on a teacher exchange in Narooma but is undefeated after two fights.
The $250,000 state government grant to form the club will be sufficient to purchase a full-size ring for the centre as well as a 21-seater bus.
The town already had connections to Australian Institute of Sport boxing coach Don Abnett who would support the new club, while Narooma boxing manager Mark “Ziggy” Zielinski is also on board.
Senior Constable Wharfe thanked both Ziggy and O’Brien’s Hotel publican Paul O’Brien for donating other boxing equipment that was currently being house in the temporary gym at the Narooma police station.
This gear was formerly used and stored at the boxing gym above the Narooma IGA supermarket, but that gym is no longer operating.
It is hoped the new boxing facilities managed as a PCYC facility would be up and running at the Narooma Sport and Leisure Centre by the end of June.
Among those supervising and training will be Senior Constable Wharf and local trainer Steve Spears, who between them have more than 50 years of training and boxing experience.]
Call the Narooma police station on 4476 2044 to find out more about joining the Narooma PCYC Boxing Club committee or getting involved in any way.
