Luckily the predicted rain stayed away and Fosters Bay presented a perfect venue for new paddlers. After a few nervous minutes getting used to paddling in time with 19 others, it all came together for the crew who managed to get through a number of paddling drills, including a change, where paddlers swap sides. This is a challenging manoeuvre that can bring even experienced crews undone but the Narooma students and teacher handled it well.

The first paddle was a fairly short one but most of the crew had smiles on their faces at the end and a number of paddlers with serious potential were noted.

When asked about their first try at Dragon Boating, the comments were that they enjoyed the new experience and had fun while exercising, that the Blue Water Dragons’ members were “very helpful and nice” and that they were very excited about having another go.

Some of the biggest smiles came from Blue Water Dragons’ members who were a bit nervous on the day but came away impressed by how quickly the Narooma High students picked up the skills and what great pioneers they were for dragon boating in Narooma.

Narooma Blue Water Dragons thank Melissa Café from Narooma High for being part of the fun and club member, Donna Anderson, for coordinating the day. Club head coach, Leck Swadling did a great job handling the crew and Sweep, Peter Essex, had a ball at the back of the boat. Club members, Kathryn Essex, Helen Hayes and Chris Chatillon provided the experience and skills to show how it’s all done but the biggest thanks go to the students of Narooma High School who made the day go so well.
