After 31 years teaching at Narooma Public School, Jon Sloan has retired. Jon's teaching career began with four years in the Tumbarumba area, firstly in the position of district relief teacher, then as a classroom teacher at Tumbarumba Public School.
He was transferred to Narooma Public School in 1982.
Jon said there were so many highlights in his career but one that stood out was taking a group of girls around NSW to compete in a state knockout soccer tournament in 2012.
“It was just one of the most wonderful experiences,” he said.
“The girls were just fantastic as were their parents and it was one of the real highlights of my 36-year career.”
There were some great comments on the Narooma News Facebook page when we posted the above picture.
“Jon, a true gentleman. I wish we had more like him,” posted Stephen Bunny, while Julie Knipler posted, “A wonderful, compassionate educator!”
Former students also recalled he taught them the “cricket with a soccer ball” game – a game called “Wongi”.
A celebration has been organised to acknowledge Jon's dedicated contribution to education on Saturday, May 31 at Narooma Surf Club. Colleagues and friends are invited to attend and interested persons are asked to RSVP by Friday, May 23 to Anne Genders at Narooma Public School on 4476 2556.
