On board the vessel Sea Eagle were the Simmi and Sibba Valgeirsson known as the Travelling Vikings who were able to snap the shot of the humpback whale seen just off Narooma’s Surf Beach.
Skipper Norm Ingersole said they spent 15 minutes with the whale before heading off to Montague Island.
The Vikings who keep their own travel blog and YouTube channel had a great time.
“Thanks for a great trip today, with the added bonus of a whale sighting out of season!”
Interestingly, a Tilba local also reported seeing a whale off Mystery Bay the same day with seals jumping around it.
This time of year is the northerly migration for the Antarctic humpback whales as they head north for the winter to tropical waters to give birth and breed.
Narooma Charters are known for their whale spotting and were the ones who spotted the young pure albino humpback they nicknamed "Mini Migaloo" - let's hope he's spotted again this whale season!
There have been whales sighting further north Kiama but these are the first whale sighting for the Narooma Bermagui area that we’ve heard of.
The whales start heading south in a more leisurely fashion in July, August, which is considered the peak whale watching period on the East Coast.
Keep us posted of any whale sightings everyone!
