NAROOMA Men’s Shed members met with the Eurobodalla mayor and family members on Thursday morning to discuss the design and location of the Wally Worboys memorial bench.

Wally passed away suddenly earlier this year and as a tribute the Men’s Shed, where he spent some of his happiest last days, is building a bench to be installed at his favourite spot on the Kianga foreshore.
It will be on the spot just in front of Anton’s Café where he used to sit with a coffee and a newspaper most mornings.
Present at the meeting were his son’s Rhys and Heath, who seemed pleased with the design and potential location.
“It’s good and as long as it is nice and comfortable,” Rhys said.
Eurobodalla Shire Council roads and infrastructure manager Warren Sharpe and mayor Lindsay Brown suggested a site that was easily accessible for the general public.
Mr Sharpe said there would be a few due diligence and environmental checks that needed to be done, but he did not anticipate any problems.
It could only be a matter of weeks before the concrete slab could be laid and the Men’s Shed members are already have a small model of the bench and are ready to start building the bench out of black butt timber.
It will be quite a large structure and in a W-shaped to allow more than one to sit and take in the spectacular view.
“We’re ready to go and just need the word ‘Yes’ to get cracking,” shed member Dick Nagle said.
Around $1000 has already been raised, including $500 from Wal’s farewell wake at Club Dalmeny and the Narooma Surf Life Saving Club has also donated $500, which should cover the costs.
The Men’s Shed members have been directed to work with council’s chief carpenter and Narooma local Steve Dobson, who will make sure the bench and its mounting are top quality and worthy of the memory of Wal.
