Tight win for Narooma Devils
THE Narooma Lions travelled to Bega on Friday night to play their first ever night game and came away with a convincing 18 point win over third placed Bega Bombers.
The Narooma team with Alexander Jones dominating the ruck and Jason [Nugget] Sauiluma getting plenty of possessions around the ground dominated the first quarter.
The second term was an even contest with the Narooma back line lead by Tim Watson, Tony Bromage and Bob Day holding firm, with the teams going into the half time break with Narooma 28 points up.
The third term was much the same as the second with both teams trying to get an advantage, Jordan Lang started to pull in some great marks and Luke ‘Red’ Talty playing his best game of the year was everywhere, the Narooma side was 24 points up at three quarter time.
The last quarter started with Narooma supporters waiting for the normal last quarter fadeout which has happened in most games this year, but Lance Musgrave with fierce attack on the ball had different ideas and with the help of all his teammates held off the Bega team to have a three goal win.
The best players in a very even team were Jason Sauiluma (five goals), Luke Talty, Alexander Jones, Jordan Lang and Lance Musgrave.
With the Narooma team still a chance to make the finals coach Rowan Hawkey urges all players to get to training. The Lions have a bye this week then travel to Eden the following Saturday.
The Narooma juniors play at Bermagui this Saturday with the U13s playing at 11am. This side is improving each week and now with a full list to pick from have a great chance for a much needed win. Narooma under 16 play Merimbula at 12.30pm also at Bermagui once again this game will be a beauty with both teams trying for that mental advantage come finals time. The club reminds supporters, parents and players of the two functions coming up, that is the supporters $5000 draw on Saturday August 16 7pm and the AGM Sunday 17 4pm both at our major sponsor the Narooma Golf Club.
Narooma Junior Devils
NAROOMA travelled to Bega last Saturday. The scores are as follows: U10s - 24-20 lost; U12s - 10-18 win; U14 - 30-24 lost; Girls - 4-38 win and U16 - 68-0 lost.
ON Saturday all ages for the Narooma Devils junior rugby league travelled to Bega for a great day of footy.
As always when you travel to Bega the opposition is tough and unrelenting and this weekend was no exception.
In the minis all ages U7s, U8s and U9s played well and had a great time showing some excellent skills in defence and attack.
There were some mixed results over the rest of the day.
The mighty U10s were beaten for the first time this season in a regular competition game but they’ll come back next week stronger than ever. The U12s again proved that they have their sights firmly set on the finals by triumphing over some stiff opposition from Bega to win 18-10.
U14s looked strong early in their match but were overcome by a determined Bega squad who just snuck in by a try at the end. Final score 24-30 Bega’s way.
It was great to see the return of all the boys who have been sidelined with serious injuries and I’m sure that this team will settle into some great footy for the remainder of the season.
The Girls League tag team completely dominated Bega with a 38-4 win. Well done girls, bring on the finals.
The U16s travelled short, relying on a couple of the lads from the 14s to play up. This game was a bruising encounter marred by some dubious refereeing decisions that left a sour taste in the mouths of all who watched. Well done to the boys for remaining focussed on their footy and hopefully all the group will pull together for a positive end to the season. Final score 68-0 Bega’s way.
Next week see’s the Devil playing home games against the Merimbula Bulldogs. See you all there to support our kids.
I would like to say a huge thankyou to all the children who turned up last Friday for the official team photos. Their behaviour and attitude was outstanding and it made the job a lot easier for the photographer and organisers.
This weekend games will see us at home against the Eden Tigers. Times are as follows.
U7 – 9am
U8 – 9am
U7 - 9.40am
