Travelling up to Sydney to box will be Narooma police officer Scott Wharfe, who qualified at an earlier assessment day.

Doors will open at 5.30pm on Saturday at Marrickville PCYC (531 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville) for the 2014 NSW Police Legacy Boxing Fight Night.

More than 100 police officers registered to fight in this year’s competition and undertook a gruelling 16-week training program to qualify for the competition.

Following the assessment day, 30 men and two women were chosen to compete in 16 bouts, fighting to raise much-needed funds for NSW Police Legacy.

Event organiser and fighter, Assistant Commissioner Alan Clarke, said the fighters are putting their body on the line for a great cause.

“All funds raised throughout the championship will go to NSW Police Legacy and Police Citizens Youth Clubs," Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.

"The funds for Police Legacy will help ensure that no partner or child of a deceased NSW police officer will ever feel forgotten or in need.”

“Many of the police fighting on the card have been training in PCYCs and forging strong relationships with young members of the clubs. There is long tradition of police officers mentoring young people in the community and PCYCs are the ideal venue for this purpose.”

“These charities are close to our hearts, as they care for and support members of our police family and the community.”

“Thanks to the support of police and the community, we have already raised $70,000, and we have set a new target of $100,000,” Assistant Commissioner Clarke said.
