ON a beautiful spring day last Thursday, 10 bushwalkers explored a lovely section of Wallaga Lake and the adjoining Fairview Farm owned by kind hosts Rod and Christine who allowed the group to walk through their beef cattle property. The walkers started next to the holiday cottages on the farm which have stunning views of Mount Dromedary and easy access to the lake. They followed Couria Creek past the cattle before walking through Gulaga National Park and following a ridge out to the lake. Walking along the lake edge, they followed a stream through a gully filled with tree ferns before emerging out onto Fairview Farm again.

The group passed the heritage-listed graves of some members of the Southam family, who started dairy farming at Fairview in 1875 and became a well-known family in the Tilba district. After this they made their way down to Wallaga Lake for lunch and then back to the cars where walk leader Maggie Finch was thanked for showing them this beautiful area.
On Saturday, four walkers joined Margaret and Rody Byrne on a ‘bush and burbs’ amble of 7.5kms, marked by steep hills, hot weather, and lovely scenery. The leaders began by showing off North Narooma’s latest landmark, the nearly-completed steps from Riverview Road up to Hillcrest Avenue. There are a lot of steps, but it’s a boon for North Naroomans and exercise freaks! After that taxing ascent, the group completed a leisurely figure-of-eight which took in old mine-shafts, stunning views of Wagonga Inlet and the eucalypt and acacia forests behind the quarry. As always with this walk, the group was saddened by the amount of household rubbish dumped in some parts of the bush, detracting from the enjoyment of this beautiful area on Narooma’s northern doorstep.
