The Southern Eurobodalla Pirates A grade team made the long trip to Eden to take on the reigning premiers in round 2 of the Far South Coast Cricket Association competition. Coach Caruana kept faith with the same line up that beat Bega-Angledale the previous week and this was vindicated as the Pirates' bowling attack made early inroads into Eden's strong top order.

Nick Mason, Matt Corbett and Rob Brown each picked up an early wicket to have Eden 3 – 19 after 9 overs. Eden then responded with a fourth wicket partnership of 44. At this point, skipper Corbett threw the ball to Sam Young, who had impressed the previous week. The young all-rounder had immediate success, breaking the partnership with his first delivery. Bowling with pace and swing, Sam troubled the established batsmen and was rewarded with his second wicket to have the figures of 2 – 8 from 4 overs. For his efforts, Sam was awarded the Michaels @ Dalmeny voucher.
At this point, Nick Mason was reintroduced to the attack. Bowling an immaculate line and length, Nick decimated the lower order to finish the match with the figures of 4 – 17. Nick is now well ahead on the Association's bowling table, having taken 11 wickets in the first 2 matches. He received valuable support from Dean Friskin (1-16 from 7 overs), whose recovery from a shoulder injury is allowing him to gain more drift and turn with his off spinners.
Eden was dismissed for 91 in 31 overs. As all cricketers know, a lowish total like this can often be more difficult to chase than a larger one. The Pirates' openers, Matt Moore (15) and Rob Brown were back in the sheds with the score on 19. It was left to veteran, Dave Sweet, to keep the innings together and he did this expertly. Though only scoring 16 himself, Dave figured in 4 partnerships before he was dismissed, which took the score to 5-76.
A combination of big hitting and clever placement of the ball from experienced players, Matt Corbett (22) and Darren Turvey (18 no), saw Southern Eurobodalla reach the target score in comfortable fashion.
This was an important and satisfying victory, giving the Pirates a share of top spot on the ladder with Tathra. Next week is a general bye for A grade due to representative matches being played over the weekend.
The B grade team had back to back away games, making the trip this week to face reigning premiers, Wolumla. Batting first, the Pirates' line up valiantly resisted Wolumla's potent bowling attack. Veteran opener, Boyd Brennan, once again proved hard to dislodge, making a patient 20.
The run rate needed acceleration, so skipper Matt Klose took it upon himself to do this. Matt finished with 48, tantalisingly close to his maiden half century for the club. For his efforts, Matt is the recipient of the Michaels @ Dalmeny voucher. At the compulsory closure of their innings, the Pirates had amassed 6 – 133.
Defending this sort of score on the small Wolumla oval proved to be too much for the Pirates' bowlers and Wolumla passed the target total losing only one wicket. New recruit to the club, Eric McMahon, showed a lot of promise with his fast – medium swinging deliveries and he will get even better once he has a few games under his belt.
B grade is at home on Dalmeny Oval next Saturday and they should relish playing in front of a home crowd.
C grade starting this week
There is still time and room for players to make themselves available to play for the club. If you have been having thoughts of either starting to play cricket, or maybe making a come back as a veteran, the C grade competition is played in a friendly and social atmosphere. All teams have father – son (and even mother - son) combinations playing. Come along and introduce yourself at training this week, which is either at Tuross Oval on Wednesday at 5pm or at Dalmeny Oval on Friday at 4.30pm. C grade's first match is on Saturday at 1pm at the Bodalla Oval. For any information, contact the Secretary on 44761441.
Sincere thanks to our valued sponsors, Club Narooma and Dalmeny, IGA Narooma, Richard Busuttil and Michaels @ Dalmeny.
