THE Tuross Head Bowling Clubs and the Tuross Head Country Club, held their annual charity day for the Moruya Hospital on Monday, October 13. The “Red Instead Day” attracted over 80 people for the event, with a game of bowls in the morning and after lunch there was a mega raffle draw, with about 90 prizes on offer. We crossed our fingers to keep the rain at bay and the “gods of bowls” were kind to us and the rain held off until we had finished outside. Over years this event had raised about $30,000 for hospital equipment and the 2014 event raised an additional amount of $2,350. This was only accomplished by the efforts people like Sue Fahey, Doreen Monks, John Monks, Ray Downey, Doug Williams and a number of helpers in the background like Val Sloane, Carol Williams, Irene Macdonald and Joyce Halls. My apologies for not mentioning everybody, however, many thanks to you all, on behalf of our community for a “sterling” job. It would be remise of me not to mentioned the contribution given by the fishing and golf clubs, also our heartfelt thanks goes to the all the local businesses both here and in Moruya for their generous donations, for without them this would be a non-event, they know the importance of giving back to the local community, in doing so it helps to improve our quality of care within the Shire. It was a shame that some of the local banks that were approached were unable to contribute.

When you thought it was safe to sit at home with your feet up, along comes another bowls competition. Yes, it was the start of the 2014 Handicap Pairs on Saturday; the first round had a total of 14 teams competing. It was a perfect day to be on the green, which is running well. The handicaps were achieved by matching a low margin and a higher margin player by a draw. Some of the results were interesting, for example Peter Davies and Ben Hewison, some would say they are both competent bowlers, but that’s the luck of the draw.
Saturdays round had K Drew and A Farrington playing P Sager and Jim Howden, M Kennedy and R Downey up against P Franke and N Downie, N Gilbert and J Kosanic playing J Penny and A Mcleod, A Winch and B Taylor playing B Hewison and P Davies, I Wratten and D Williams versus J Madden and A Etheredge, A Skelton and P Macdonald playing W Kallweit and J Cremona, the final game had L Kozlik and S Peck playing S Graham and P Bird. The results varied at the end of the day’s event with P Bird winning 21 to 17, A Farrington 22 to 21, N Downie 24 to 15, A Mcleod 21 to 20, P Davies 34 to 19, A Etheredge 36 to 17, J Cremona 29 to 20. All the winning sides move on to the next round, with those teams which had byes. There were three games that were closely fought matches, such as P Bird game which was won on an extra end, A. Farrington who came back from 9 to 18 on the 15th end, to win 22 to 21 and the A Mcleod match which saw them falling over the line by 1.
