It’s that time of year again for offshore fishers out of Narooma, too many fishing options (are we spoilt or what?) - and it’s only going to get better.

Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were fairly quiet on the offshore fishing front, suddenly the flathead which had been in almost plague proportions were not biting, and both Tuross and Montague Island saw fishers scratching for a feed.
The only positive option was to try to target the Gummy Sharks which had become active east and south of Mystery Bay with the dark of the moon.
The best results have been achieved with the following techniques: if there’s little or no water movement then drift whilst letting out a little berley, if there’s current - anchor up and berley.
Remember to cut the backbone of any caught shark, this will improve the eating qualities of the flesh.
Then on Sunday, after the new moon on Friday, things started to quickly pick up again, with nice pan sized snapper being caught at Montague and slightly better fish being taken off Tuross.
Flathead were again being caught in modest numbers in most areas.
Local charter boat Playstation went to Tuross on Sunday landing a great bag of snapper, then headed due east for a trolling session landing a nice 8kg dolphinfish in water up to 19.8c. This is a very positive sign for things to come this season
A few albacore, striped tuna, and yellowfin tuna were caught over the weekend from due east of Bermagui to the Moruya Canyons with one yellowfin estimated at 40kg and another at 30kg, as well as plenty of ‘fin' around the 10kg mark
Long Finned Perch and pigfish have returned to Montague Island in good numbers this season, after an absence of nearly five years.
Both these fish inhabit the deeper reefs to the north and east of the Island, and are considered the best table fish on the South Coast
A reminder to all the members of the Narooma Bowlo Fishing Club that their monthly fishing competition is on again this weekend.
The ‘Bowlo’ is always looking for new members, for more information on the club please ring ‘Fish Fingers’ Dave Clark on 0419 127 712.
Joke of the week: What do fishermen and hypochondriacs have in common - They don’t really have to catch anything to be happy.
Fishing tip of the week: When buying bait squid, avoid any which have turned pink - fresh is best, and with squid white is fresh.
