But Harry was a puppy, full of adventure and mischief with a great need to explore his surrounds.
“He was a worry with us living on the highway,” Deborah said.
“We had to be so careful about him getting out and he used to look sadly down from the balcony at the world’s goings on.
When Harry was a little over two-years-old, Deborah and Bernie thought he might be happier with a family that had children to play with him and a yard that would give him a better life.
It took Deborah and Bernie a while before they found Harry the right home, but they did find a home with a family, another dog and children in Dalmeny.
Although Harry escaped from his new home in Dalmeny a few times, he was always found and returned back to his new owners.
Harry lived with his new family for more than two years and although Deborah and Bernie missed him they were happy he’d found a good home.
Two months ago though, Harry went missing again. His new owners had been trying to find Harry but he didn’t return to Dalmeny.
Harry found his way back to Deborah and Bernie’s Olympic Lodge Motel.
“I thought I saw a Jack Russell that looked like Harry poke his head around the corner,” Bernie said.
“I called him and he came running towards me, it was Harry,” he said.
“He’d been missing for a week and was very tired and thirsty with a really sore ear,” Deborah said.
“He had found his way all the way from Dalmeny to Narooma on his own.
“He settled straight back in and we decided to keep him, which was OK with his other owners,” she said.
Deborah and Bernie have now sold their “hottest little motel in town” and are packing up ready to move to Queensland to be with family in December. And yes, Harry will be going with them.
